Description

Before photography, the Poles had Jan Matejko: a beloved painter of the 1800s who depicted the royals, battles, and tumultuous events that shaped their nation over centuries. Explore the house where he spent most of his years and get a glimpse into the life of a Polish national treasure.

The house that stands on Floriańska 41 Street allows you to peer into the life of a Polish artist from the 19th century. Specifically, the beloved painter Jan Matejko. You'll see the furniture he sat on, the table he dined at, and plenty of family memorabilia.

Many of his famed history paintings are on exhibit, and they prove the old cliche about a picture being worth a thousand words. When you lay eyes on works such as The Shuysky Princes before King Sigismund III, Polish history grips you in an instant.

And to round it all off, Matejko himself was an inquisitive fellow and an avid collector of things. If yours is also a curious mind, it'll find plenty of food for thought on display here: early photographs of Krakow, Jewish ceremonial art, goldsmithery, militaria, torture devices, and thousands of other things he gathered.
