Allow plenty of time to get the palace from the train station - there’s no tolerance of missing your time slot!! Take a taxi up and a bus down. The info in the palace is very good - in Portuguese...

Definitely getting these tickets in advance and booking a time slot. Our train from Lisbon was cancelled and the next train was delayed so glad I had booked an afternoon slot!

Gardens were amazing and so extensive - kept getting lost as they were so big! Such an incredible collection of trees and shrubs. If you like tree ferns you will think you are in heaven!

About: Park and National Palace of Pena

This 16th-century monastery was transformed into a royal palace by King Ferdinand II. Not known for his subtlety, Ferdinand's folly is a no-holds-barred tribute to the wealth and influence of 19th-century Portugal.

A testament to the power of imagination (and money), the castle is surrounded by 500 acres of plants and maze-like pathways.
