Eldridge Street Synagogue is a really gorgeous old building - you can tell it's going to be beautiful from the exterior which has elements of Gothic and Moorish. The guide I had was really friendly and helpful and there's plenty to see, not just about the synagogue itself, but about Jewish immigrant life from the 19th and early 20th century.
The interior really is splendid, and it should be born in mind that this is still a functioning place of worship. it was left to fall into disrepair after the local Jewish population dwindled following World War Two, but the restorations have been done with great sensitivity, and in fact one huge feature, which is contemporary, is stunningly beautiful. There's a real sense of history and integrity to the place and the staff, who I understand are volunteers, are really helpful and kind. They will also provide a little map of synagogues and places of Jewish interest, both existing and defunct, all within a short walk - this was a really worthwhile and excellent value ticket.
