Fierljeppen, literally translated to far leaping, is a unique Frisian sport that sees competitors leap across a canal using an 8-13 meter-long pole. Think of it like the high jump with climbing in the middle and a crash landing at the end!
You have to see it to believe it, but after sprinting up a runway, the competitor grabs their pole, shimmies to the top as it makes an arc toward the other side of the canal, and then crashes down into a sand bed on the other side of the water.
The first official match was all the way back in 1771 and the world record is an impressive 72 feet 10 inches! If you want to see something truly Dutch, don't miss your chance to see a fierljep competition
