  • See original photographs from the volcanic eruption of Eldfell on Vestmannaeyjar, in 1973
  • Enter the excavated house of a Heimaey family, who had to flee with their kids
  • Find out about the Surtsey eruption, another act of nature which led to new studies on the island

Whether or not you were around in 1973, you may have heard about Iceland's Eldfell volcano, which erupted for about six months and covered much of Vestmannaeyjar in ash. It was one of the country's biggest natural disasters, garnering global attention. The event forever changed the lives of people on Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. Eldheimar will fill you in on the jaw-dropping wrath of a natural wonder that's still blowing minds today.

Eldfell's eruption was a seismic event of epic proportions that charged through the Westman Isles off the south coast of Iceland. Find out what happened on that fateful night, when villagers had to flee their homes to escape the boiling lava flow and rubble.

See before and after photographs of Heimaey, and enter the home of a local family who were forced to leave with their three young children. The home was buried under ash for over 40 years, but has now been excavated to explore.

This fascinating museum also covers the Surtsey eruption. Find out about this eruption, which lasted almost four years, and see what scientists have discovered on the island since.

A must for any volcano fans!
