  • Avoid the queues and go inside Palazzo delle Prigioni, the prison palace overlooking the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront
  • Take a guided tour of the 16th-century Venetian jail, which is connected to the Doge's Palace by the famous Bridge of Sighs
  • Go inside the courtroom and the cells, and learn about life inside the prison for petty Venetian criminals of old. That includes notable escapee, Casanova!

It's not often you would want skip-the-line prison access, but in the case of the fascinating Palazzo delle Prigioni it's actually quite handy!

Venice's 16th-century jail is part palace, part penitentiary. A guided tour includes the courtroom where small-time villains of the Venetian Republic were sentenced, and their lonely cells. You'll also explore places never opened before and enter the torture room to see the instruments used in the past to make criminals confess

See real graffiti left by prisoners, hear about myths, legends and daring escapes, and consider the lightless existence for those inside this mysterious relic.

  • Show your smartphone ticket to your guide, who will be holding a sign indicating your tour
  • The meeting point is right at the entrance of Palazzo delle Prigioni
  • Make sure to be at the meeting point 5 minutes before the start of your tour

The tour was very interesting. However, the tour was conducted in both English and Italian. The guide would talk for 10mins straight in English then we had to sit through another 10mins of him saying the same in Italian which made the tour very long and tedious at times. There was also nobody holding a sign at the entrance as we were told so we almost missed our slot. Don’t look for a sign just be at the entrance at the time stated
