Delve deeper into Menorca's history with a visit to the defensive Tower of Fornells. Discover what day-to-day life was like for the occupying British force stationed there and see an impressive piece of early 19th-century engineering.
Fornells Tower was built to guard the entrance to Fornells harbour and prevent enemies from coming ashore and attacking nearby Sant Antoni Castle. A small garrison would have controlled the local area, ready to repel a potential enemy invasion.
Inside the tower, there was storage for weapons, ammunition, and food, as well as a floor that housed the garrison and an artillery platform. The original entrance of the truncated cone-shaped tower, reinforced with sandstone blocks, was on the first floor and was reached by a wooden ladder that could be pulled up in the event of an attack.
