Cusco to Puno is a popular leg on South America's 'Gringo Trail', but don't just catch a direct bus – there's so much to see in between! This guided, one-way culture trip takes in some of Peru's best sights and flavors, en route to the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Your first stop is the church of San Pedro Apóstol. This chapel in Andahuaylillas goes by many names, but its billing as the 'Sistine Chapel of America' is perhaps the most alluring. With its ornate ceiling, mural paintings and eye-popping gold leaf altar, it's a fair comparison.

Making your way south, next up is a quick look around the Inca site of Raqchi, and what's left of the enormous Temple of Wiracocha. Your guide will provide the flaming-hot factoids concerning the temple, thought to have been built to appease an angry, lava-wielding god.

Having fueled up with a Peruvian buffet lunch, your journey continues to Raya Pass. The promise of a snow-capped Andean mountain view and sweeping landscapes here means you'd do well to charge those camera batteries.

The small Lythic Museum of Pukara is your last port of call before Puno, and houses locally excavated pottery and artifacts. Heads up, this includes a 2,000-year-old carving of a positively terrifying god known as 'The Decapitator.'
