The Art Institute of Chicago

There are plenty of treasured works at the Art Institute of Chicago. Most recognizable is American Gothic (1930), Grant Wood’s much-parodied, much-loved portrait of rural America. Impressionist masters like Monet, Manet, Degas and Renoir are also represented.

Elsewhere the museum has fine examples of art from countries and cultures around the world. There are pop-art icons, Aztec carvings, Buddhist sculptures from India, iconic Japanese prints, and many more works to capture your intrigue.

The Field Museum of Natural History

As one of the most famous museums in the United States, this is an experience that you can't miss when visiting Chicago. Stare up at the largest T. It used to be the Sears Tower, but in 2009, London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings acquired the naming rights. No matter what you call it (everybody still refers to it as Sears Tower), it's an architectural icon. When it was built in 1973 it was the tallest building in the world. It's now 14th-tallest, but offers unrivaled views of the Windy City, and sees more than a million visitors each year.
