Tickets overview

  • Castel Sant'Angelo was originally built as a tomb for the ashes of Emperor Hadrian

  • It's unique cylindrical structure makes it a stand-out building from other ancient Roman ruins

  • When it was converted into a military fortress in 402 AD, much of its original decor was lost or destroyed

  • Castel Sant'Angelo was made into a protective castle by several popes

  • Built over the river Tiber, Castel Sant'Angelo now stands guard near the entrance of Vatican City (although it is still managed by Rome)

With 1.2 million annual visitors (and counting), acquiring your Castel Sant'Angelo tickets in advance is always a good idea, especially during Rome's high season.

Choose the right Castel Sant'Angelo ticket for you:

  • General entrance to Castel Sant'Angelo grants you fast-track access to the castle, as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions

  • Enjoy fast-track entry with either a self-guided audio tour, or join a guided tour with a live guide

  • Make a brief stop at Castel Sant'Angelo on your way to the Vatican with a combi ticket to both attractions

  • Spending some time in Vatican City? Consider the Vatican City Pass, which gets you access to the Vatican Museums (and the Sistine Chapel) as well as admission to Castel Sant'Angelo

  • Castel Sant'Angelo is closed on Mondays, as well as January 1, May 1, and December 25

  • Children aged 18 and younger can enter for free. Check the Castel Sant'Angelo website to see if you qualify for discounted admission

  • This venue has limited wheelchair access

  • Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month

  • Budget at least an hour for a thorough visit of Castel Sant'Angelo

It was extremely easy and absolutely worth the purchase. The line for people without tickets was long and completely in the sun. We walked straight up to the empty line for people with tickets and walked right in. Worth every penny.

Absolutely fantastic so glad we didn't have to stand in line in the hot weather. We spent a couple of hours walking around definitely worth the visit.
Castel Sant'Angelo

About: Castel Sant'Angelo

The towering cylinder of Castel Sant'Angelo, and its statue of Archangel Michael, is an instantly recognizable silhouette on the banks of the Tiber. Initially built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, its purpose has changed many times over the years, from a fortress, a residence, a prison, and now a museum.

The Colosseum is a massive ancient amphitheater in the center of Rome. Picked apart by scavengers and ravaged by earthquakes and time, the Colosseum still stands as an impressive symbol of life in Ancient Rome. It showcases the power of past emperors and the durability of the Eternal City. This huge, marble and limestone structure was built to hold more than 50,000 spectators, all there to revel in the various forms of (mostly violent) entertainment, such as hunts, gladiator battles, and executions.

The Renaissance-era St Peter's Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world (and the home-church of the Pope). Highlights include the dome (the biggest in the world), Bernini's Baldacchino (the centerpiece of the church), and Michelangelo's Pietà (the only artwork he ever signed). For both the pious and the casual visitor, a trip to St. Peter's is an awe-inspiring trip into the heart of Vatican City.

Built between 1609 and 1613, this opulent structure - fountains, gardens, pink marble walls, frescoed ceilings - seems ideally suited to house one of the world's best collections of art. And that was exactly what it was built for. Architect Flaminio Ponzio designed it for the cardinal and art collector Scipione Borghese, who wanted a party villa on the edge of town where he could house his enormous collection of priceless art. In 1901, the collection (and the gallery, and the park that surrounds it) was acquired by the Italian government, and opened to the public. As a museum, Galleria Borghese punches well above its weight with an impressive hit rate of masterpieces. Sculptures by Bernini and Canova, paintings, by Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian... the list goes on.
