Bruegel, a poetic experience
Now on  - Sep 13, 2020

Marking the 450th anniversary of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, this exhibition at the Atomium reflects on various facets of the artist's work and personality.

With displays spread across two floors, visitors will have the unique chance to walk through a pop-up installation featuring five paintings from the famous Six Seasons series, giving the impression of being right in the middle of the landscape.

On the lower floor, you can discover how Bruegel broke new ground in terms of composition and rhythm through the use of innovative techniques like bird's-eye view perspective, the division of his paintings into successive planes, and his humorous use of images.

Upstairs, the focus is on Bruegel's elusive personality. While many biographical details remain uncertain, his fascination with the humanistic elements of peasant life shed some light into who the artist was, and how he was able to distinguish himself from his predecessor, Hieronymus Bosch.

This space-age architectural triumph is an iconic symbol of modern Brussels, a giant iron crystal structure reaching 100 meters into the sky. Now, you can go straight to the top and experience mind-blowing exhibitions, fascinating history and, naturally, panoramic views of Brussels and beyond!

Built for the 1958 Brussels World Fair, the Atomium was originally intended as a temporary celebration of scientific ingenuity. But, much like the Eiffel Tower, the locals decided they rather liked it, and the Atomium has been a permanent fixture of the Brussels skyline ever since.

Inside, it's part museum, part exhibition space, and part viewing platform. The high-speed elevator will take you to the top in seconds, and you can learn all about the Atomium's history in the museums, and catch up on the latest high-concept art in the vast exhibition spaces.
