What's included

Admission to Montmajour Abbey
Booklet in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch
  • Walk the ruins of a famous Benedictine monastery, which has been built upon since the tenth century
  • See the building that inspired Van Gogh during his final years in the artistic commune of Arles
  • Discover how time and culture changed the abbey by admiring early naves, the cemetery, and fortified towers

At the time of its initial construction, Montmajour was an island some 43 meters above the marshland terrain that surrounded it. However, a lot has changed since the building's humble beginnings.

This ticket lets you explore one of the most fascinating sites around Arles. You'll understand why Van Gogh made it one of his subjects, and how more than a thousand years of development shaped its purpose and its grand exterior.

Lieu magique, grandiose et dépouillé me rappelant vaguement le film " le nom de la rose". L'installation d'Eva Jospin avec son cénotaphe apporte une touche contemporaine supplémentaire.
