Entrance to the National Tile Museum (Museum of the Azulejo)
  • Learn how tiles have been made and decorated throughout history
  • Discover the National Tile Museum's collection of tiles and marvel at their designs
  • Visit the historic Convent of Madre Deus and enjoy a drink in its magnificent courtyard

The National Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) is one of Portugal’s most important national museums, for its unique collection of azulejo tiles.

The tiles are a distinctive artistic expression of Portuguese culture, and you’ll be able to learn more about them inside the former Convent of Madre Deus building, founded in 1509 by Queen Leonor.

Take a journey through the history of tiles, from the 15th century to the present day. Alongside the history of tiles, you’ll explore a beautiful example of Portuguese Baroque that’s profusely decorated with gilded carvings, paintings, and – of course – tiles.

Gorgeous historical tile work inside an ornate old church. There are tile painting workshops available for an extra fee. A must-see museum.
