What's on Gemäldegalerie
The Gemäldegalerie holds a world-class collection of European art from the 13th to 18th century. Founded in 1830, it's been systematically built up and perfected. The 72 rooms span almost two kilometres, with two major sections of Italian (13th-16th c.) and Netherlandish (15th-16th c.) painting. German painting of the Late Gothic and Renaissance is represented by great masters like Dürer, Cranach, Holbein and Rembrandt, with 16 of his works forming one of the greatest collections. This is flanked by Dutch and Flemish pieces of the 17th century. Italian, French, German and English painting of the 18th century is presented in six rooms. Altogether, the museum has over 1,000 masterpieces.
