Bologna was the city that welcomed Michelangelo twice, first as a young man seeking refuge, and later as a renowned master. On both occasions, it shaped his artistic journey in meaningful ways.
This enduring connection is the starting point of the exhibition Michelangelo and Bologna, hosted at Palazzo Fava from 14 November 2025 to 15 February 2026, which marks the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s birth (1475–1564).
As the curators highlight, the exhibition aims to restore Bologna’s crucial role in the evolution and refinement of Michelangelo’s genius.
The exhibition reconstructs the artist’s two decisive stays in Bologna. This is organized into six sections and features more than fifty works, from marble sculptures and drawings to rare books and archival materials.
