St. Paul Outside the Walls (Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura) is one of Rome's four ancient, major basilicas - and the second largest in the city after St. Peter's. The first church was built here by Emperor Constantine, on the spot where St. Paul was said to be buried. Although the ancient basilica was destroyed by fire in 1823, this faithful reconstruction contains a number of original treasures. Including mosaics, the high altar, and the portraits of every pope since St. Peter.
