About the Xunantunich
One of the most spectacular remnants of Maya civilization in Central America, Xunantunich is an ancient archaeological site perched atop a ridge above the Mopan River, in the Cayo District of Belize. Roughly translated as "Maiden of the Rock" or "Stone Woman" from the Yucatec Maya language, the site gets its name from the legend of a ghostly woman with glowing red eyes who haunted the central pyramid here.
Built around AD 600 near the end of the Maya Late Classic Period, Xunantunich remains one of the best-preserved Maya sites. If you're looking for something awesome to do in Belize, definitely check this remarkable time capsule of ancient history out.
