“For me, people come first... I have tried to assert the dignity and eternal importance of the human being.”
Alice Neel: People Come First is the first New York museum retrospective of the radical painter's work in 20 years, with over 100 paintings, drawings and watercolors making up the collection.
Neel was a fierce humanist, known for her work depicting victims of the Great Depression, as well as capturing fringe political leaders, queer artists, neighbors, friends, lovers, and strangers in New York City, where she lived for much of her life.
A feminist icon and passionate advocate of social justice, Neel's work is as relevant as ever in 2021.
