War-themed art is so important in Russian history that it eventually gave rise to a genre of its own. In the Middle Ages, military motifs could already be seen in icon painting. Churches and temples housed representations of war, such as the army of warriors led by the Archangel Saint Michael, among others. When Russia became an empire in the 18th century and the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg was founded in 1757, this genre resurfaced with new artistic trends and influences.

Throughout the centuries, wars, like epidemics and poor harvests, have been constant companions of humanity, in Russia and beyond. The exhibition War and Peace in Russian Art is composed of 183 works, which offer a complete look, from different perspectives, on two antagonistic and essential poles of life, and how they help illuminate the complexity of Russian cultural history.
