The quiet town of Pingxi located in the Shifen District draws hordes of visitors annually, right around Chinese New Year. It's renowned for its Sky Lantern Festival which sets the sky alight with glimmering lanterns onto which wishes are written. This four-hour tour will guide you through Pingxi's history, as well as famous spots including the Old Street, Shifen Waterfall, and Shifen Railway Station.
The sky lantern tradition was born out of hardship, as townsfolk would send lanterns into the sky to let their families know that they were safe from being pillaged or killed. Over time, the practice was continued to ward off evil spirits or to wish for a good harvest. These days, it's done to symbolize peace – and because it looks beautiful. Get a lantern, write down a wish, and try it yourself!
Walk through Shifen Old Street and visit the old Shifen Railway Station, where you can see a part of a 12.9 km track that was constructed at the turn of the 20th century to transport coal. See the homes hugging the tracks as locals go about their daily life. The nostalgic ambiance of this spot makes it an extremely popular filming location.
You'll also get to see 'Taiwan's Niagara Falls' in the form of Shifen Waterfall. Torrents of water thunder down this curtain-style fall, looking like a satin sheet of water pouring into a deep pool that forms prismatic rainbows when it catches the sun. An atmospheric mist hovers over the falls on gloomy days, making it worthy of seeing regardless of the weather.
Thanks to roundtrip transport, you'll be back in your hotel after a fulfilling morning of culture, nature, and overall splendor.
