Schönbrunn Palace FAQs

Knowing what ticket to buy for Schönbrunn Palace can be overwhelming. The grounds of Schönbrunn Palace encompass a sprawling 400 acres, including stately gardens and a zoo. There's no shortage of things to see without even mentioning the palace itself, or the concerts that take place there!

If you’re visiting with the family, hopping on the Schönbrun Panoramabahn is a fun way for the kids to travel around the grounds without their little legs getting tired. Tiergarten Schönbrun, or Vienna Zoo, will keep the family entertained if you just want a quick peek at Schönbrun Palace’s exterior.

If you want to explore the palace and gardens, and learn some history while you’re at it – then a Schönbrunn Palace ticket with a guided tour and skip the line entry is ideal.

If you’re feeling indulgent or looking for something truly special, don’t miss out on tickets for an evening dinner and concert inside the romantic Orangery.

Schönbrunn Park is free to enter, however, the palace is not. The park opens its gates 6:30 am and closing times vary depending on the season. Keep in mind that certain areas in the park require admission tickets, including the Privy Garden, the Orangery Garden and the Maze.

As mentioned, the palace itself isn’t free to enter, but you can download a free audio guide from Schönbrunn Palace’s official website.

The length of your visit depends on how much you want to do during your time there. With all the gardens and goodies to explore in Schönbrunn Park, including the zoo, you could easily while away an entire day.

If you get Schönbrunn Palace tickets with a guided tour, then it should take you around 90-minutes. But, with so much to see within the grounds, including famous architecture you’ll definitely want to factor in more time for your visit.

About: Schönbrunn Palace

Initially envisioned as a hunting lodge for the Habsburgs, Emperor Leopold I commissioned the construction of Schönbrunn Palace at the end of the 17th century. In the middle of the 18th century, it was converted into a residence for Maria Theresa, the only female Habsburg ruler. Since then, it has played host to the leading statespeople of Europe. 44 of its 1,441 rooms are on display to the public, and it's the most-visited attraction in Vienna.

Its gardens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and have been open to the Viennese public since 1779.

Located on the grounds of the imperial summer palace, Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo) is the oldest zoo in the world - and yet still frequently voted one of the world's best. The zoo was founded as an imperial menagerie in 1752, by the then Holy Roman Emperor, Francis I. It was opened to the public in 1779. The Tiergarten has an amazing array of animals (more than 700 species in all).

The Belvedere Palace is in fact two palaces: the Upper and Lower, both of which were built by Prince Eugene of Savoy. These Habsburg palaces are the centerpieces of gorgeously landscaped gardens, with tiered fountains and statues nestled in the greenery. Both palaces are filled with priceless art in the permanent collections (including Gustav Klimt's The Kiss), as well as changing exhibitions.

The world-famous Spanish Riding School is the training ground for riders and their Lipizzan horses - Europe's oldest breed of horse. It's located between Michaelerplatz and Josefsplatz inside the Hofburg, in central Vienna. The 'Spanish' in the title refers to the Spanish heritage of the horses. This beautiful building has been an equestrian training center for more than 450 years. Guests can enter and watch these amazing horses learn the ropes and reins, in preparation for their performances in the Winter Riding School (Winterreitschule) in the Hofburg.
