About: Schloss Ort Day Trips from Vienna

A dramatic medieval castle located in the Salzkammergut region of northern Austrian, Schloss Ort was built with the extra precaution of having the entirety of Traunsee, a substantial glacial lake, for its moat! The castle is one of the most photographed attractions in one of Austria's most photogenic regions, and it's no wonder.

But visitors beware! Legend has it that Traunsee is inhabited by its very own version of the Loch Ness Monster! Nicknamed "Lungy" by local residents, a number of sightings have been reported over the years, with some even including mention of a mermaid riding upon the beast's back! Could it be true? There's only one way to find out...

Located on the grounds of the imperial summer palace, Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo) is the oldest zoo in the world - and yet still frequently voted one of the world's best. The zoo was founded as an imperial menagerie in 1752, by the then Holy Roman Emperor, Francis I. It was opened to the public in 1779. The Tiergarten has an amazing array of animals (more than 700 species in all).

The Belvedere Palace is in fact two palaces: the Upper and Lower, both of which were built by Prince Eugene of Savoy. These Habsburg palaces are the centerpieces of gorgeously landscaped gardens, with tiered fountains and statues nestled in the greenery. Both palaces are filled with priceless art in the permanent collections (including Gustav Klimt's The Kiss), as well as changing exhibitions.

In the oldest part of the Hofburg Imperial Palace you'll find perhaps the greatest treasury in the world. It holds gems, crowns, scepters, orbs, and regalia collected and hoarded by the Habsburg Empire over a period of more than 800 years. The items are visually stunning and historically significant. In fact, the actual Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire rests here. In addition to the worldly mementos of kings, queens, and emperors, there's also an ecclesiastical collection which features relics ascribed to various saints.
