Travel 20 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge and you'll find one of California's most impressive natural sights – the towering California Redwoods of Muir Woods that can reach up to 250 feet tall.

There are many trails to walk inside the woods, including one which wends its way through the shadowy Redwood Creek where the forest's largest trees stand. While the trees will take your breath away, make sure to also keep a keen eye trained on possible animal sightings, like the northern spotted owl, deer, and other native animals.

Muir Woods is also home to 13 species of ferns – including the maidenhair, golden, and lady fern – so make sure to look down from the impossibly high canopy once in a while.

After your visit to Muir Woods, stop in at the seaside town of Sausalito. You'll enjoy amazing views of San Fran and charming stores you won't find in the city.
