The Turda Salt Mine (also known as Salina Turda) has history dating back all the way to the Roman occupation of what was then known as Potaissa. The mine was one of the most important of its kind in Transylvania for many years, serving as the region's main supplier of salt.

While operations ceased in 1932 due to low efficiency and a high degree of competition, the mine was reopened to the public as a unique tourist destination in 1992. Having undergone an extensive modernization process since then, with further improvements being made between 2008 and 2010, it's now one of the region's most popular sightseeing and relaxation destinations for visitors and locals alike.
