Pompeii - Near Rome
Pompeii was lost to us for many centuries. It was discovered initially in 1599 and properly in the 1700s and it’s one of the world’s truly great archaeological sites. The volcano wiped out the people, but the town they lived in was remarkably well-preserved because of the combination of ash and lack of moisture.

Must sees in Rome
We decided to explore the ruins without a guide as we walk quite slow and wouldn't have been able to keep up.
The queue for skip the line was longer than the pay on the gate but we weren't held up much. Staff didn't recognise our e- tickets.
Wear sensible shoes, sun hat and sun screen. We visited in March and it was hot then!.
Our only issue, we could have done with another couple of hours on site.
The problem is the ticket office in Pompeii. The hatch for "Skip the line" was closed, so we had to stand in the general ticket line.
Poor service in Pompeii.
