Best time to visit
Early afternoon
The self-guided tour of Mamertine Prison with a tablet takes about 1 hour. The whole visit takes 3 hours
  • See the prison which was once home to vanquished emperors and kings, and Saints Peter and Paul
  • Get a comprehensive audio tour explaining the amazing history of the Forum's "basement"
  • Access the Colosseum via a special entrance and explore the Roman Forum at your leisure

Plug into your audio tour of the Mamertine prison, in the somewhat creepy basement of the church of San Pietro in Carcere. Learn about the prisoners who served time here, including Saints Peter and Paul, then access the Colosseum via a special, sneaky entrance!

Prisoners at the Mamertine prison, also known as the Tullianum, were once lowered into the cell through a hole in the ceiling, but luckily you get to use the stairs.

Put on your audio headset and explore what is essentially the basement of the church of San Pietro in Carcere, a prison that housed vanquished kings, other wrong-doers, and even Saints Peter and Paul.

It's small, it's dark, it's cramped, but it's one of the most atmospheric parts of the Forum! You'll even see the bars that St Peter was allegedly chained to, and the pool of water he used to baptize visitors.

When you've soaked up this special part of history, make your way into the architectural triumph that is the Colosseum via a special, speedy entrance and explore it and the Roman Forum at your own pace.

Needed better directions to the ticket office. Had to ask several people to get to the correct place. Same with the Coliseum, had to ask several people to get into the correct line.

It was a great visit. :)

Really good way to do it, but the key is to print out your tickets too as it speeds things up. The queues for the non pre-booked are horrendous!

We chose to visit the Mamertine Prison at 8:30am. It is a very small museum so it was nice to be the only visitors there at this time. After this we gained specially access to the Roman Forum through an alternative entrance near the exit of the Mamertine Prison. We definitely underestimated just how large the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill are and managed to spend close to 3 hours wandering throughout it. By the time we reached the Coliseum it was around 12:30pm at which point there were long lines for tickets--being able to skip these was great!

Great service. The ruins and coliseum were brilliant!! Everything was so easy to do and took away any stress that we would have had if we had to buy on the day. At the coliseum we got to skip the huge queues and made the trip a real breeze. Would highly recommend!
