Overview

Highlights

  • See works from the School of London in the heart of Rome in this collaboration with Tate, London
  • Enjoy works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, and Paula Rego
  • See more than 45 paintings and sketches from artists who were shaped by war and immigration

Description

In terms of cultural and political change, no century has been as turbulent as the 20th. Two world wars and mass immigration influenced by a world that was in a state of flux brought together artists in London, and birthed a school that was able to look at humanity with no filter.

The School of London cast an unrelenting eye on the fabric of society, and went on to shape it. Introspective, raw, and honest, their work was shaped by the revolutionary changes happening in the world. Immigrants from Germany (Auerbach and Freud) and Ireland (Bacon), the painters searched for meaning in London and addressed immigration, their misery, their yearning for change, and the hope for redemption.

Visitors will be able to walk through the Chiostro del Bramante's 16th-century architecture and admire the outpouring of the artists through painting, sketches, and engravings that span nearly 60 years.

Excellent
We enjoyed the exhibition even though it is a small one and there are several artists beyond Bacon and Freud that are represented. The Audio guide attached is a must and adds a lot of info.
