Ellsworth Kelly Rijksmuseum

May 28, 2021 — Oct 24, 2021

While the Rijksmuseum holds many artistic treasures within its hallowed walls, the lesser-known sculpture gardens at the front and rear of the museum are always spectacular too. Throughout the summer months of 2021, nine monumental sculptures by the famed American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) will be on display in the Rijksmuseum Gardens.

Kelly is one of the most renowned abstract artists of the post-war period, and this is the very first exhibition in the Netherlands devoted entirely to his sculptures. The exhibition has been arranged in close partnership with the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation in Spencertown, Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, Pon, and the Rijksclub.

The National Museum of the Netherlands, or the Rijksmuseum, has been housed on this location since 1885. It recently underwent a ten-year, €375 million renovation. The Rijksmuseum has over 5,000 paintings (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) and has an emphasis on the Dutch Golden Age. But it's not just paintings – there are sculptures, antiques, collections of clothing and weapons, and one of the finest actively-used libraries you'll ever see.

The Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers designed this elegant building, and even put himself in the design as one of the statues on the roof.
