  • Climb to the top of Saxon St. George's Tower for stunning views of Oxford, and descend into depths of the crypts
  • Enjoy continued access to the castle and explore the prison cells, castle mound, and much more on your own

Join a costumed guide and uncover the rich and fascinating history of Oxford, its castle, and prison. Clamber up Saxon St. George's Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and enjoy panoramic views over the historic city.

Then, descend into the atmospheric 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remains of St. George's Chapel. You'll also explore the Debtors' Tower, Prison D-Wing, and the mound of the 11th-century Motte-and-Bailey castle.

Home to the oldest university in the English-speaking world, as well as some of the best examples of Anglo-Saxon architecture, Oxford is an atmospheric place, steeped in fascinating history.

Relive this history as an expert guide in full medieval garb shares Oxford's storied past in real-time, with plenty of humour sprinkled in for good measure. Hear tales of Empress Matilda and the fate of Mary Blandy, one of Oxford Prisons most famous criminals. If your curiosity is piqued, you can explore the castle until closing time at your own pace after the tour ends.

After you're teeming with new knowledge, you can relax in the café with a fresh brew and plan your next adventure in Oxford!

My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The history of the place was wonderfully articulated by our guide, Aidan, who really brought the events, characters and stories to life. The view from the tower over Oxford is also worth the admission price alone. Highly recommended.
