  • Travel to Carnton historic home and learn how its owners, the McGavocks, turned it into a field hospital for Southern forces

On the morning of 1 December 1864, the small town of Franklin (population: 750) woke up to 9,500 casualties resulting from the clash of Union and Confederate forces. Some of the bloodiest hours in the Civil War took place here, and during this tour you'll have the chance to visit key sites in the battle, including 19th-century homes, the Carter House and Lotz House.

During your day-long trip, you'll also be given the chance to explore Franklin. Take some time to enjoy the modern-day counterpart where you can eat, shop and view a few historic sites on your own. After lunch, you'll meet again and journey to Carnton. History abounds here and your guide will provide emotional tales that may shed some new light on the war.
