The history of modern Morocco, and that history's often tempestuous relationship with the art world, is the focus of a fascinating new exhibition at the Museo Reina Sofia. As the name suggests, Moroccan Trilogy focuses on three seminal chapters in the country's past.

The first section focuses on the fractious years in the lead-up to Moroccan independence in 1969, when art in the pursuit of Moroccan identity clashed with emerging artistic ideals of a borderless, universal human experience.

The second part of the exhibition is devoted to the art that emerged between 1970 to 1999, which saw an increased Arabization of Moroccan culture. While the third explores the period from the 90s to the present day, which has seen a shift toward a more open society, where novel forms of artistic and cultural expression have found new spaces and ways to flourish.

Remodeled and converted into a museum in 1992, this 18th century hospital holds Madrid’s premier collection of contemporary art, including Picasso’s Guernica, which is arguably Spain’s single-most famous artwork. The Museo Reina Sofía also holds works by the other 20th-century titans of Spanish art, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró.
