Miquel Barceló: Metamorphosis
Now on  - Sep 30, 2021

Museo Picasso Málaga presents Miquel Barceló: Metamorphosis, an exhibition that takes its name from Franz Kafka’s famous story. The show comprises almost 100 of Barceló's recent works, with 30 ceramics, 13 paintings, 42 watercolors, 6 travel logs, and one small sculpture, along with an installation comprising seven large bronzes that will be set up in the central courtyard of the museum.

Mutation, mobility and transition are central to Barceló's work, which has undergone its own slow metamorphosis since his career began. The passage of time and the artist's culturally nomadic nature are thus key themes of the exhibition. Barceló's work is also subtly infused with sociological and ecological commentaries, while also expressing a passionate inner life.

His work has been showcased in elite museums around the world, such as the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Louvre in Paris; Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, and the Marlborough Gallery in New York. Don't miss it at the Museo Picasso Málaga this year!

James Turrell: Cherry
Now on  - Jun 30, 2021

Picasso wasn't the only famous artist to play with perception. Renowned within the Light and Space artistic movement, American artist James Turrell has been warping the definition of subject, object, viewer, and artist for decades too. When not making art inside volcano cones, Turrell is known for interactive installations designed to bamboozle the viewer's senses, and blur the line between the 'perceived' art and the 'external' world of perception itself.

One of Turrell's best-known series of works is his Aperture series, of which Cherry was perhaps the most seminal. This walk-in installation consists of two spaces – the viewing space and the sensing space. In the viewing space, two projectors illuminate the sidewalls and are adjusted so that their light does not enter the sensing space beyond the window. The sensing space, by contrast, is indirectly lit, and consists of a space filled with with crimson hues, with light used to create an illuminated sense of volume which Turrell calls “atmosphere”.
