German Expressionism
Now on  - Mar 14, 2021

The collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family was for a long time an Old Masters-only club. But that all changed in May 1961, when the rebellious Baron Hans Heinrich couldn't resist purchasing a watercolor by Emil Nolde, ushering in a new modern chapter in one of the world's most illustrious private art collections, with 20th-century art and German Expressionism in particular playing a key role.

In 1993, the Spanish government swooped in and acquired a large chunk of the Thyssen private collection and its significant selection of German Expressionist works. These have been exhibited in the opulent galleries of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza ever since. Now, for the first time in decades, these works will be reunited with the ones that remained with the Thyssen-Bornemisza family, in this special exhibition on German Expressionism.

This unique exhibition will adjust the usual chronological order that Expressionist works are exhibited at the museum, in order to explore the creative evolution of Expressionism as a genre, its reception among the public and critics, and how the relationship between Baron Thyssen and his art dealers brought international fame to his immense collection.
