The imposing Nijo Castle was built as a residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. Get up close to its fortifications, palace, gardens, and walk along the 'nightingale floors' – which creak like birds when walked upon to detect assassins or thieves.

Once you've bought your tickets separately for Nijo Castle, you'll be taken inside for an exclusive tour and get access to parts that other visitors don't get to see!

  • Purchase your tickets to enter Nijo Castle at the ticket booth at the main entrance (Higashi-otemon Main Gate), and go through the gate
  • Show your smartphone ticket to the guide waiting for you in the yard, at the right hand side just after the entering gate

Shoes cannot be worn inside Ninomaru Palace, so please be sure to wear socks.
