Get your Irish castle kicks at Dunguaire, a 16th-century tower house on the shores of Galway Bay! The picture-perfect castle has a rich history dating back to 1520, and it was once the meeting place for famous literary revivalists like W.B. Yeats and George Bernard Shaw. Step into the past!
Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway lived at Dunguaire Castle until 1642. In 1924, a time of great revival in Irish literature, Dunguaire was bought and repaired by Oliver St. John Gogarty, a well-known surgeon and literary figure. It was then that it became the venue of choice for literary revivalists to meet.
W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Edward Martin, and J.M. Synge have all twiddled beards and drummed pencils between these walls!
Walking around Dunguaire Castle today will give you a fascinating insight into the way people lived from 1520 through to modern times.

- By car from Shannon Airport or Limerick City: Take the N18 through Ennis and Gort. Turn left at the village of Adrahan and continue to Kinvara
- By car from Galway: Take the Galway / Limerick Road (N18) from the city, through Oranmore and Clarinbridge to Kilcolgan. In the village of Kilcolgan, turn right and continue to Kinvara
