Pulau Ketam is occupied by two predominantly Malaysian-Chinese fishing villages founded circa 1880, and the area is rife with mangrove swamps.

The mangrove-rich river banks along Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor is home to one of the largest firefly colonies in the world – and this is where Kuala Selangor Fireflies (Kampung Kuantan) is stationed.
