Visiting this museum was a unique experience. The museum is near the S-Bahn (train) station, easy to access, not far away from the city centre. The staff was very friendly and eager to help us. The exhibition does not only cover the history of Ballinstadt , but also approaches the phenomenon of Migration throughout the time from many different perspectives and narratives. Visiting this museum can be (unexpectedly) an emotional experience, as it has not to do with presenting only historical facts but also invoking an empathy about the people having to leave their homes. The only negative comments i could make would be about the fact that the are no locker for the personal belongings. Although the admission fee might seem a little bit expensive, i think that it is worth it.

About: Emigration Museum Hamburg

The Emigration Museum Hamburg (BallinStadt) is a former halfway house/temporary shelter in the Port of Hamburg, where millions of European emigrants stayed before making their journey to the Americas. The buildings were destroyed by the Nazis in 1934, but were later rebuilt true to their original form in the early 2000s. Today it serves as a permanent museum exhibition memorializing the millions who passed through on the way to the New World.

Its collection of Judaica is one of the largest in the world - about 40,000 objects, 100,000 books, and a copious archive of Czech and Moravian Jewish community histories.
