Forchtenstein Castle's extensive weapons collection features countless armaments from the 16th century and the Thirty Years' War, and this new exhibition shows what life was really like for the soldiers that served this prestigious family. Surround yourself with medieval history and take a guided tour through this historic castle.
The looming castle sitting beneath the Rosaliengebirge mountains is one of the most important symbols of Burgenland. Built in the early 14th century, Forchtenstein Castle withstood the Turkish invasion of Vienna of 1529, and in 1622 came into the possession of the Counts Esterházy, who completely rebuilt it.
The armory alone is worth the trip (unless you were trying to storm the castle, in which case the array of muskets, helmets, halberds, crossbows, cannonballs and hand grenades might make you reconsider). With such an impressive display of weaponry, it's no wonder nobody could ever take Forchtenstein Castle!
The Grenades, Flags, Grenadiers exhibition covers ten fascinating rooms, and teaches you all about life in the Esterházy uniform, and introduces you to the fearsome weapons and equipment which defended their rule.
With free guided tours in German, the castle's secrets are just waiting to be discovered!
