I am Surrealism!
Now on  - Dec 31, 2020

Just what exactly is Dalí's Surrealist art all about? How do his otherworldly landscapes relate to themes of the subconscious mind, dreams, desires, the fear of death, and the tension between the 'real' world and that of the imagination? What is universal about the human experience and how is our true nature subject to the vicissitudes of life and societal norms? And, what is the artist's job in representing these themes?

In this comprehensive exhibition at the Dalí Theater Museum, twelve of Dalí's landscapes will be used to answer some of these brain-scrambling questions – and many more – through a fascinating deep dive into the tapestry of esoteric symbolism contained within Dalí's iconic artworks.

By exploring some of the common thematic threads that run through Dali's landscapes, from barren desert-like vistas to the prevalence of cypress trees as well as a fair share of sexually charged imagery, the off-the-wall quirky style that Dalí embodied through his art is revealed. Through this, we are left with some profound philosophical questions about simulacra, aesthetics, morality, and the relationship between art, rationality, and the lived experience.

Salvador Dalí's mark on Barcelona is impossible to miss, but there are more Surrealist wonders to admire outside of the city. This day-long excursion transports your small group through the sun-soaked Catalan countryside to places significant in the life of the artist dubbed Avida Dollars.

Begin in Figueres, Dalí's birthplace. Your English-speaking guide will fill you in on the artist's formative years as you walk the streets and see the Surrealist's gift to the city: the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

From there, you'll follow the art trail to the paradisaical village of Cadaqués, a gem on the Costa Brava. Marvel at the pearly white houses, hugged by rugged hills and the teal-blue Mediterranean.

It's around a mile from Cadaqués that you'll find Portlligat, Dalí's home for around 40 years. Explore the labyrinthine Dalí House-Museum where he created some of his most iconic works, and tour the rooms in which he and his muse, Gala, lived.
