About: Davenport House Museum Entrance and Shop

Glimpse into the American past when the nation was new and Isaiah Davenport, a young carpenter from New England, achieved success as a builder in his adopted city. The world of 1820s Savannah is presented through the outstanding Federal-style home Davenport built for his household. Its survival is a testament to the tenacity of seven Savannah women who came together in 1955 to save the structure from demolition. This action prompted the founding of the Historic Savannah Foundation, which has brought about an architectural renaissance through historic preservation in the coastal Georgia city.

Ships Of The Sea Maritime Museum

The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum – founded in 1966 and set inside the elegant, 19th century Scarbrough House – exhibits ship models, paintings and maritime antiques, principally from the great era of Atlantic trade and travel between England and America during the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum features nine galleries of ship models, maritime paintings, and artifacts. The vast majority of ship models were commissioned by the Museum to interpret the rich story of Savannah's maritime history. While the museum's collection is impressive, so too is its location. A National Historic Landmark, Scarbrough House was built in 1819 for one of the principal owners of the SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Scarbrough House is surrounded by the largest private garden in Savannah's historic district which is open for free to the public seven days a week.
