In 1949, the Italian government commissioned Salvador Dalí to illustrate one of the most famous and iconic works of poetry in the Western tradition: Dante's Divine Comedy. The Catalan Surrealist jumped at the opportunity to collaborate across time with the great Italian writer, finding many great resonances between Dante's masterpiece and his own life, with themes of exile, love, torment, pleasure and temptation all central to Dalí's oeuvre. Dalí created 100 stunning and colorful illustrations, which for a number of political reasons, were not published in full until 1960.

Now, the Dalí Theatre Museum is bringing these incredible works home, with a special exhibition of Dalí's illustrations of the Divine Comedy. This unmissable spectacle of legendary artists collaborating across centuries is set to be one of the cultural events of the year.

'I want my museum to be a single block, a labyrinth, a great surrealist object. It will be a totally theatrical museum. The people who come to see it will leave with the sensation of having had a theatrical dream.'

Dalí got his wish. The Dalí Theatre-Museum – under which the artist himself lies buried – is one of the most surreal and theatrical museums in the world. This unique museum, decorated with giant eggs and fantastical figures, features the largest collection of works by Salvador Dalí, including exclusive items from his personal collection.
