From Saint Sophia in Istanbul to Saint Peter's in the Vatican, Ahmet Ertuğ travels the world in search of the finest examples of ancient architecture - Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman or Christian - illustrating the three principles established by the theorist Vitruvius: durability (firmitas), utility (utilitas), and beauty (venustas).
Using large-format cameras and negatives (20x25 cm), long exposure techniques, and drawing on the expertise of his architectural eye, Ahmet Ertuğ captures in his shots what makes architecture monumental, and what contributes in the smallest detail to the spirit of the place.
For this exhibition at the Conciergerie, the choice fell on shots of French and Italian monuments.
