Aerodream: Architecture, Design and Inflatables Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine

14 Oct 2021 — 14 Feb 2022

For a time, creators from all disciplines seized on inflatables and pneumatic structures as a new creative medium, supporting multiple forms of action and expression. From the middle of the '60s to the start of the '70s, artists, architects, engineers and designers used inflatables to redefine the relationship of architecture to the space around it and to the body.

At the crossroads...

At the crossroads of different currents, from spatialism to pop art, from Gutai to Groupe Zero, from action art to radical architecture, the use of inflatables has had a worldwide impact between Europe, Japan and the United States. Inflatable structures thus convey two forms of narrative: one is linked to the development of technologies, to the industrial and technical history of tires, from the automobile to aviation and to applications in the architectural field; the other relates to the mythology of flight, of the air, to the human dimension and to the body.

At the source of the exhibition, these two areas of creation form the basis of an effervescence where tires are creative media, as much as they accompany, through design and cinema, the affirmation of a new fashion. The peak of this model is closely linked to the industrial optimism of the 1960s, symbolized by the interiors and furniture of Quasar Khan or Aérolande, a universe that disappeared with the oil crisis of the 1970s.
