What is a democracy? What is a dictatorship? All your questions will be answered here at Memento Park, a homage to Hungary's communist era. See statues of Lenin, Marx, and Engels, get a photo with a Red Army soldier, listen to Stalin or Che Guevara on the Communist Hotline, and more.

Only democracy can provide an opportunity to think freely about dictatorship. Or about democracy, for that matter! There's a lot to think about in this giant park, recreating tyranny through the eyes of art.

Lenin, Marx, Engels, Dimitrov, Captain Ostapenko, Béla Kun and other icons of the communist world are all here. So is a 7.2-meter tall statue of a stern Soviet soldier that once stood on the top of Gellért Hill in central Budapest. It was removed in 1992, after the fall of the communist regime.

Browse Stalin's Boots - a photo exhibition on the history of the 1956 revolution. Learn about the political changes of 1989-1990. And in the barracks-theater, kick back and watch a documentary on The Life of an Agent.

Will you look at things the same way once you know the secret police's sneaky surveillance methods, or how easy it is to plant a bug?

Interesante paseo por uno de los escenarios ideológicos más representativos del pasado siglo XX. Un viaje al pasado reciente para entender mejor el panorama actual de la Europa del Este.
