The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin's most famous sites. Built in 1788, its design is inspired by the Acropolis (earning Berlin the nickname "Athens of the North"). In the early 1960s construction of the infamous Berlin Wall began on the west side of this gate. Until the wall came down, the gate was only visible in the west from a platform.
Since the wall came down in 1989, the Brandeburg gate has been accessible to everyone. The square in front of this gate - Pariser Platz has become a gathering place for many occasions. Every trip to Berlin should include a visit to this Berlin icon.
