Booking tickets to visit Benagil Cave in advance is always a good idea. This way, you won't be disappointed that you missed your chance to see one of the highlights of the Algarve.

Getting to Benagil Cave requires some planning as it's an isolated sea cave, so think about your trip ahead of time and book yourself onto a Benagil Cave tour.

Ways you can get into Benagil Cave:

Kayak

Rent a kayak from Benagil beach and paddle your way to the cave.

It's only around 200 meters away, so your arms won't be exhausted by the time you get there.

Paddleboard / SUP

Standup paddleboarding has had a meteoric rise in popularity recently, and for good reason! If you're looking for a fun way to get to Benagil Cave, then take up a standup paddle tour.

Boat tour

Want to appreciate the Algarve's coastline, or get a hit of adrenaline before you see Benagil Cave? Then check out the various boat tours that leave from towns close to Benagil.

A knowledgeable local captain will be able to tell you more about the cave while taking you to other beautiful photo locations before you see the main event – Benagil Cave – and look up through its eye-like opening.

Please note, swimming to Benagil Cave is not advised unless you have a great deal of experience with ocean swimming.

  • The best time to visit is during the summer months (June-August) – you'll be in the Atlantic Ocean after all, so don't expect the water to be as warm as the Mediterranean

  • Boat tours usually have a final departure time of around 18:00

  • It's better to start an active tour, like kayaking or paddleboarding, early in the morning to avoid the strength of Portugal's midday sun

  • Swimming to the cave is not advised – there are strong currents, so you're better off not taking the risk

If you're looking to simply marvel at the natural beauty of the Benagil sea cave and the surrounding area, a tour taking in the entire cave circuit on the Benagil coast is for you. Relax in the boat and soak up the rays as your skipper takes you from cave to cave from Portimão.

If you want all the relaxation with the option of a refreshing swim, try the Benagil Cave tour with a stop at Praia da Marinha.

Looking for something a little more active? Kayaking and standup paddleboarding are hugely popular ways to get to Benagil Cave and have a look around.

Benagil Cave is located in the Algarve, around two and a half hours from Lisbon. You'll find this incredible natural wonder in Lagoa, around 200 meters from Benagil Beach. With its open ceiling drawing in cascades of light, Benagil Cave tours are one of the most popular things to do in the Algarve.

If you're not staying in the Algarve but still want to make a trip to Benagil Cave, it's possible. The best option is to drive, a journey that takes around 2.5 hours from the capital. Traveling by public transport is an option, but you'd be advised to stay a night or two due to the long travel time.
