  • See the strange rock formations of the 'Serrated Mountain', and learn the hows and whys of the area with the Montserrat audiovisual show
  • Witness the famous Black-Faced Madonna / Virgin of Montserrat, plus important art from the 13th through 20th centuries
  • Explore the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, and learn about the history and mysteries of the region with the film Montserrat Behind Closed Doors

The jagged peaks of Montserrat are a spiritual shrine and Catalan cultural center. A visit here offers a relaxing respite from the bustle of Barcelona. Soak up sea views, visit a towering Benedictine monastery, and learn about the history of Montserrat in a thrilling new AV show. This is an all-in-one Spanish spectacular.

The stunning Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey was founded in the 10th century, and is still home to more than a hundred Benedictine monks. As you wander the tranquil property you'll see some spectacular art, and perhaps a few brothers at work or rest. You'll also learn the history and mysteries of the area via the audiovisual masterpiece Montserrat Behind Closed Doors.

No visit here is complete without seeing the 12th-century Virgin of Montserrat (Black-Faced Madonna). This 12th-century wood sculpture is one of the patron saints of Catalonia. For more art, the nearby Montserrat Museum has ancient archaeological artifacts and masterpieces by the likes of El Greco, Caravaggio, Picasso and Dali.

After a day of serenity, you can expect to float back down to sea level (but we recommend taking the train).

We also offer tickets for Montserrat including transport!

Getting There

Montserrat is a one-hour drive from Barcelona. You can go by car to the top, but the parking there has an extra fee and is often full. The best option, if you'd like to enjoy the view on your way to the top, is the cable car (Funicular Aeri De Montserrat).

Montserrat is a beautiful Monastery in a picturesque setting. We were excited at the views on the train before we even stepped off. Once we did we were treated to a beautiful church and museum. Then, we took the tram up and went on a long wonderful hike to the tops of several other mountains with rewarding vistas for our efforts. All was well marked and we left the mountain tired and satisfied.

Great audio tour, the museum is a world class collection, so glad we saw it. You don’t need a ticket to see the basilica, but do to see the museum and audio tour which is worth the 16.00

The audioguide and documentation given are very useful and to be followed. It helps to understand and appreciate all the different elements. Even if there are in my opinion some misalignments in the audio-guide. Also the audio-visual introduction to the site could be much more developed, informative and complete. If you can, try to go to Montserrat on a sunny day if you want to appreciate the environment, landscape, and very specific mountains that the site offers. The museum is worth it, really interesting, with great pieces of art to be seen - think of booking approx 1h30 of your time for the museum itself if you are keen on appreciating the paintings of famous painters.
