  • Supplementary activities such as lectures, films, guided tours, music and theater shows bring the already vibrant exhibitions even more to life
Description

On the outside, the Tropenmuseum is an impressive Dutch brick building. Inside, it contains the whole world! Located in Amsterdam's hip East, this museum uses artifacts from around the globe to challenge visitors to think about the world around them.

The Tropenmuseum is dedicated to the enormous cultural diversity that enriches the world. Exhibitions about cultures from around the world show that despite cultural differences, we've got plenty in common. Kids, in particular, love the chance to investigate lives very different from their own.

The Tropenmuseum is located on the border of the Oosterpark, a stone's throw from some of Amsterdam's hippest bars and cafes. As it's a little out of the tourist 'blast zone' a visit here is comparatively relaxed.

An extensive cultural program with music, talks, workshops, and guided tours during weekends and holidays makes sure no day at the Tropenmuseum is the same.

Afterlives of Slavery

The Tropenmuseum's latest exhibition tackles the difficult issue of the Netherlands' relationship with colonialism and slavery – placing the voices and experiences of the subjugated at center stage. Bringing together stories from the past and present day, Afterlives of Slavery challenges the visitor to confront the legacies of slavery which still exist today.

Fashion Cities Africa

Shining a light on the diversity of fashion and modes of self-expression, Fashion Cities Africa examines the signature styles of four African cities – Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Nairobi. With fashion items, personal accounts, blogs, photographs and films, this new exhibition explores the link between personal identity and place.
