  • Visit a historic 17th-century canal house, perfectly restored to the state enjoyed by socialites Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen
  • Marvel at a collection of art and historical artifacts that capture the pinnacle of wealth in the Dutch Century
  • Relax in the beautiful French-style garden, an oasis of calm in the hectic city center

Travel back in time and discover the luxurious lifestyles of the 19th-century Dutch aristocracy! This classic canal house showcases the best of Amsterdam in the 1600s, when the house was built. Explore the Huis Willet-Holthuysen's extensive collection of art and historical artifacts – it's like stepping into another world!

Considered one of the earliest private collections in the Netherlands, this trove of wonders is exactly as Abraham Willet and his wife Louisa Holthuysen left it in 1895. See paintings, sculptures, books, photos, ceramics, and even weapons!

The house itself is an artwork in its own right. Highlights include the stunning Louis XVI style ballroom and gentlemen's parlor, as well as the beautiful French Classical style garden – an oasis of serene calm, right in the center of Amsterdam.

Upon her death, Louisa Holthuysen's only wish was that the house be returned to the City of Amsterdam and made open to the public. 120 years later, that's still the case!

Insider tip

The ceiling of the gentlemen's parlor was painted by Jacob de With – make sure to crane your neck and get a good look!

Recommend the audio guide, especially the “follow on” sections. These give fascinating insights on the family and also on WW2 period.
