The Jewish Museum takes you through four hundred years of Jewish history in the Netherlands. Find out how the first Jews arrived in Amsterdam, how their integration took place, and the difference between Jewish religion and Jewish culture.

Not far from Amsterdam's Waterlooplein flea market, the Jewish Cultural Quarter sits nestled in the leafy Plantage district. It features a number of significant sites worth seeing. Make a day (or half-day) of wandering this area.

The Jewish Historical Museum is spread throughout four monumental synagogues. The permanent exhibitions tell the story of Jewish culture and history in the Netherlands. One part of it - the junior Jewish Museum - is set up as the home of a typical Jewish family. Directly opposite the Jewish Historical Museum is the stunning 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue. Unassuming on the outside, the interior of this holy place is stunning - and still used for services today.
